The Takahashi laboratory is divided into two groups of wind group and Leo group according to the nature of the fluid. Each group is divided according to the research subject.
  • Wind Team : Research on fluid related vibration for Newtonian fluid such as water and air.
  • Rheology Team : Research on rheology (complex fluid) for non-Newtonian fluid such as surfactant, liquid crystal, polymer solution.

Research of shear-induced structure and shear-bands of wormlike micellar solutions

Surfactant and salt make wormlike micelle solution. Wormlike micelles have viscoelastic properties like polymer solution. It is not used only detergent but also Cement thickener. It has many characteristics in flow field. In this study, we investigated that shown below.
  • The solution becomes partially white and cloudy, and the steady viscosity increases.
    [ SIS : Shear Induced Structure ]
  • The solution viscosity increases to 100 times, and decreases viscosity.
    [ SH : Shear Hardening ]
  • Discontinuous layers with different properties are formed.
    [ SB : Shear Banding]
In this study, "flow birefringence measurement" using laser light against the flow of this string-shaped micelle aqueous solution, "mechanical measurement" using a rheometer (rotational viscometer), macroscopic flow field by flow birefringence The purpose of this study is to investigate multifaceted combinations of "visualization experiment" to visualize layer structure and to clarify the mechanism of micelle structure change.
